Illustration showing subtraction concepts like take away and less

Teacher's note: Teacher narrates the above pictures for enhancing the vocabularies such as difference, less, move away, go away to denote subtraction.

Take away

Learn

Subtraction means to take away!

Example of taking away: 4 birds on a branch, 1 flies away, 3 are left

Practice

Practice problems: Taking away lollipops, flowers, and mangoes

Subtract

Learn

'−' is the sign of subtraction.

Example showing the subtraction sign: 5 - 2 = 3

Practice

Practice problems for subtraction with pictures of tops, onions, and fish

Learn

Complete the subtraction fact by circling.

Example of circling to subtract: 7 circles, circle 3, 4 are left

Practice

Practice circling to subtract with apples and cups

Learn

Complete the subtraction fact by striking.

Example of striking to subtract: 6 leaves, strike 2, 4 are left

Practice

Practice striking to subtract with balls and butterflies

Subtraction using lines

Learn

Example of subtracting with lines: Draw 7 lines, strike out 2, count the rest

Practice

Practice problems for subtracting using lines

6 - 1 = 5

5 - 2 = 3

9 - 4 = 5

Subtraction using beads

Learn

Example of subtracting with beads: 5 beads, remove 1, 4 are left

5 – 1 = 4

Practice

Practice problems for subtracting using beads

6 – 1 = 5

5 – 2 = 3

9 - 4 = 5

Try this

Create your own subtraction fact

5-1= 4

Mind math

Fill the boxes to get 3.

Mind math exercise: fill in the boxes to make the answer 3

Mind math (Oral)

1. Pari bought 7 bananas. His brother ate 2 of them. How many bananas are left with Pari?

Illustration of 7 bananas

7 – 2 = 5 bananas

2. Mani bought 6 eggs. 3 of them were broken. How many eggs are left?

Illustration of 6 eggs, 3 broken

6 – 3 = 3 eggs

3. Thendral is 8 years old. Her sister Nila is 2 years younger than her. How old is Nila?

Illustration of two girls, Thendral and Nila

8 − 2 = 6 years old

Think like a mathematician

How can I fill these boxes using the numbers 8, 5, 3 ?

8 - 5 = 3

Pleasure time

Fill the circle by + or −

Activity: Fill the circles with plus or minus signs

Try this

I am more than 5 and less than 8. I am not 7. Who am I?

Answer: 6

Activity

Aim: Creating subtraction stories.

Things needed: Flash card with subtraction facts like

Example subtraction flash cards: 9-4, 8-3, 5-2, 6-1

Procedure:

(i) Divide the class into two groups.

(ii) Let the students from one group pick up the card from the deck and show it to the other group.

(iii) Students from that group have to make a subtraction story for that card.

(iv) This activity can be interchanged between the groups and continued.

Teacher's note: Teacher can encourage the children to tell stories on addition and subtraction on their own. This encourages mathematical communication in the classroom.
