Place value and comparison of numbers

Place value chart

Fill the correct numbers in the following table.

Place Value Table

Let us learn to use Abacus

Example: 1

The abacus shows the number: 7,341.

Number name: Seven thousand three hundred and forty one.

Expanded form: 7 thousands + 3 hundreds + 4 ten + one

\( = 7000 + 300 + 40 + 1 \)

\( = 7 \times 1000 + 3 \times 100 + 4 \times 10 + 1 \)

Abacus Example 7341

Try this

Add 4 tens 2 thousands to this number 345678.

Solution:

\( 345678 + 2040 = 347718 \)

\( = 3 \times 100000 + 4 \times 10000 + 7 \times 1000 + 7 \times 100 + 1 \times 10 + 8 \times 1 \)

Activity: 1

The above Abacus shows the number 34,284

Number name: Thirty four thousand two hundred and eighty four.

Expanded form: 3 Ten thousands + 4 thousands + 2 hundreds + 8 tens + 4 ones.

\( = 30,000 + \underline{4000} + 200 + \underline{80} + \underline{4} \)

\( = 3 \times 10000 + 4 \times \underline{1000} + 2 \times 100 + 8 \times \underline{10} + \underline{4 \times 1} \)

Abacus Activity 34284

Abacus:

Abacus is a counting device that consists of a frame holding rods on which a specific number of beads are free to move, each rod denotes place values such as units, tens, hundreds, etc…

Activity: 2

Number: 52,41,258

Number name: Fifty two lakhs forty one thousands two hundred and fifty eight.

Expanded form: 5 ten lakhs + 2 lakhs + 4 ten thousands + 1 thousand + 2 hundred + 5 tens + 8 ones

\( = 5000000 + \underline{200000} + 40000 + \underline{1000} + 200 + 50 + 8 \)

Abacus Activity 5241258

Try this

How many thousands are there in 3,45,789?

Solution: 345 thousands are there in 3,45,789

Example: 2

The Abacus shows the number 1, 21, 35, 211

In words. One crore twenty one lakhs thirty five thousand two hundred and eleven.

Abacus Example 12135211

Expanded form: 1 crore + 2 ten lakhs + 1 lakh + 3 ten thousands + 5 thousands + 2 hundreds +1 ten + 1 one.

\( = 1,00,00,000 + 20,00,000 + 1,00,00,000 + 30,000 + 5000 + 200 + 10 + 1 \)

\( = 1 \times 1,00,00,000 + 2 \times 10,00,000 + 1 \times 100,000 + 3 \times 10000 + 5 \times 1000 + 2 \times 100 + 1 \times 10 + 1 \)

Find it yourself.

Find the sum of the place values of 2 −> 7226382

Solution: \( 2 + 20000 + 200000 = 220002 \)

Do you know?

Name the number which has 7 zeros after one. Answer: 1 Crore

Activity: 3

Given number: 6,42,35,415

Abacus Activity 64235415

Expanded form: 6 crores + 4 Ten lakhs + 2 Lakhs + 3 ten thousand + 5 Thousands + 4 hundreds + 1 Ten + 5 ones.

\( = 6,00,00,000 + 40,00,000 + \underline{2,00,000} + \underline{30,000} + 5000 + 400 + \underline{10} + 5 \)

\( = 6 \times \underline{10000000} + 4 \times \underline{1000000} + 2 \times 100,000 + 3 \times 10000 + 5 \times \underline{1000} + \underline{4} \times 100 + 1 \times 10 + \underline{5} \times 1 \)

Example: 3

Write the place value of each digit for the given numbers.

For example: 4 34, 56,789

Place Value Breakdown Header
